The rise of China in international development

Last week, our Executive Director Jessica Toale spoke at an international development workshop organized by British Expertise and Cambridge University’s Centre for Rising Powers (CRP) on the rise of China international development.

Speaking alongside KC Lin, Executive Director of the CRP and Tom Cargill, Executive Director of the British Foreign Policy Group, Jessica outlined the rapid changes in China’s role as a direct deliverer of overseas development projects and as a multilateral actor. She explored some of the reasons for this change and highlighted some areas for future collaboration through the One Belt One Road Initiative, Asian Infrastructure and Investment Bank (AIIB), and UN Sustainable Development Goals.

This event was followed by a workshop with Professor Steven Evans, Director of Research in Industrial Sustainability at the Department of Engineering and international expert on sustainable cities, and an event on the Future of the UN with Rt Hon Lord Mark Malloch-Brown, former deputy secretary general of the UN and Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell.
